Slow Food members and friends spent a morning helping teens of the Community Design Center's East Side Garden Corps plant a garden. There were about 20 people in all, and they had a productive two hours before the showers began. At that point, some workers headed for their cars, while others continued to plant until they were soaked through.
About the Community Design Center: This 40-year-old nonprofit organization has youth farms in St. Paul and holds educational workshops on food, environmental and outdoor subjects for student interns and their families. Students raise vegetables on urban farms and sell the produce at farm stands in St. Paul, at the Mill City farmers market in Minneapolis and through their CSA program. The group also initiates urban restoration projects in which students participate.
